Two-day project reopens busy local road

HAZLET, NJ – The Middle Road bridge (R-15) over Flat Creek reopened this afternoon to motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic after a two day closure for scheduled repair work to the bridge’s timber structure.

“The Middle Road bridge repair project is part of the county’s efforts to responsibly maintain its bridge and roadway infrastructure and to keep traffic moving,” Freeholder Deputy Director John P. Curley said. “The bridge is scheduled for complete replacement within the next two years.”

Motorists used signed detours between Poole Avenue and Union Avenue on June 1 and 2.

“The scheduled repairs consisted of a steel plate, steel channel and mudsill repair to restore the structural integrity of the timber nail laminated deck,” county Engineer Joseph M. Ettore said. “The extreme weather this past winter accelerated the deterioration rate to warrant this interim repair work in anticipation of the eventual replacement of the bridge”

The work was performed by the county’s on-call maintenance contractor, IEW Construction Group Inc. of Trenton.
